My Not-so-Ordinary Journey from Natural Pain Relief Methods to Bi-Lateral Knee Replacement

Natural and bi-lateral knee replacement are approaches to health that don't generally belong in the same sentence. But, that is how my last 10 years has played out. After being told, at the age of 46, that I had so much arthritis in my knees that I needed to have both replaced, I decided to try every non-invasive treatment I could to at least postpone what I knew would be long, painful and as all surgeries are, risky. Now, at 57, I am a week away from have both knees replaced.

Alternative Pain Relief Options

After my diagnosis, I first tried multiple injections of Rooster Comb and Cortisone, both having a limited window of relief which decreased after multiple injections. I also became concerned with the potential longer term effect these foreign substances may have.

That's when I turned to the traditional Asian treatment of acupuncture. During my research, I discovered the fascinating world of meditation and the pain relief possibilities of acupressure.

This was when I developed The Lotus Mat and Pillow (www.lotusmatandpillow.com) to help others dealing with pain.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells

While trying to relieve the pain naturally, I was also searching for a long term treatment of the cause, not just the symptoms. I was excited to learn about a leading edge treatment which extracted blood-forming cells from umbilical cords that were donated from women with healthy pregnancies. These cells have been used to treat over 80 life-threatening diseases as they renew themselves and differentiate into other types of cells

At the time when I was researching this treatment to regenerate the diminished ligaments in my knees, it was being regulated by the FDA. It was an "outside substance" being injected so it was treated as a drug. So, twice, I traveled to Puerto Vallarta and Dream Body Clinic. (www.dreambody.clinic) to have millions of these cells injected into my knees.

In my opinion, I had the most success with this treatment. I immediately felt relief and I maintained a good quality of life for another 6 years. In order to continue seeing improvement, I would have to get additional injections. Unfortunately, this is not something that is covered by insurance and it is costly. I hope this changes and becomes a treatment that is approved and covered in the United States in the future, opening up this non-invasive, low-risk approach for treating chronic disease to everyone.

The decision to do both Knees at the Same Time

I had continued to experience pain and by now I was bone on bone in my right knee and not much better in my left. I went back to steroid shots but the relief I got was getting shorter and shorter. I got a shot in September of 2023 in preparation for a three week volunteer trip in Zimbabwe. After two weeks, they were wearing off.

I loved every experience in the African bush with these amazing animals, working with others who shared the same passion and I became fearful that I wouldn't be able to continue contributing to the work that needed to be done. That was the point when I realized my knees were not going to get better and it was seriously going to impact my quality of life. I I knew it was time to take action.

On December 19, 2023, my husband and I met with Dr. Perry Greene of Michigan Orthopedic Specialists, to review my x-rays and talk about our options. Both my knees were so painful, I couldn't decide which I would do first. It had crossed my mind to do both but I wasn't sure if it was even an option and what the risks and challenges might be. Dr. Greene, respected as one of the best knee/hip surgeons in Michigan, explained he was very selective in whom he approved for bi-lateral Total Knee Replacement (TKR). His patient had to be healthy, at a relatively young age and have a strong support system. He also explained that insurance companies will only pay doctors 50% on the second knee when done at the same time so many surgeons won't do them. But, he felt like this made sense for me and he would perform the operation. We walked away confident this was the best approach and scheduled it for April 8, 2024.

The Mental and Emotional Planning for Bi-Lateral TKR

Am I Brave or Crazy - Maybe a little bit of both

Once we made the decision, so many things went through my mind. I went on a research binge...joining Facebook TKR Support Groups, Chat GPT inquiries, reaching out to my friend network for contacts that had experience with this, etc.

During this process I found myself sometimes feeling fearful and anxious. I listened to the advice my mother gave, and did a lot of self talk to control my mind and the places it was going. After all, these thoughts were not helpful. I needed to stay focused on the quality of life I would re-gain which would enable me to continue to my adventures.

To help remind me of this, I got my first tattoo on the outside on my thigh on Feb 7, 2024.

Akashinga is Shona for "the Braves Ones". Led by Australian Damien Mander, they are a team of rangers made up entirely of women who stand up for African wildlife. Based in Zimbabwe, they have helped drive an 80% downturn in elephant poaching in the Lower Zambezi Vally in their first 2.5 years. While protecting these animals, they develop personal and financial security and empower their communities. This is their story: www.akashinga.org When I am feeling fearful, seeing this symbol of these women's strength and bravery inspires me to be the same.

Planning For Bi-lateral TKR - A check list -- Two Weeks Prior to Surgery

It's become real. It is time for action. Let the preparations begin...

  1. Start watching everything I put in my mouth to ensure I'm getting all of the nutrients needed for healing.

    1. Lean protein (skinless chicken, beans, fish, soy and nuts)

    2. Zinc helps speed up the healing of surgical incisions and boosts the immune system. Zinc is essential for protein synthesis and reduced levels may impair recovery from surgery. Raspberries are a great source. Also, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are all incredible sources of antioxidants.

    3. Pineapple is good for blood vessel stability. It contains bromelian which reduces swelling, fights pain and reduces risk of blood clots.

    4. 2 Brazil nuts a day provide selenium to improve wound healing.

    5. Have prune juice available for potential constipation after surgery

  2. Stop taking all supplements (and prescriptions if applicable). Avoid Vitamins C, E, B and K, fish oil, tomatoes, garlic, green tea and flaxseed.

  3. Stop drinking alcohol

  4. Start Prehab exercises

  5. Confirm dates with friends/relatives that will be helping during the first few weeks, including those that will be pet-sitting.

  6. Order durable equipment

    1. Walker with two wheels

    2. Cane (borrowed from Buy Nothing community member)

    3. Toilet riser with handles

    4. Ice Machine with Compression including two knee pads and the Y connector so both knees can be iced at once. This one is has battery option so can be portable and is highest rated. https://myicewrap.com/collections/breg®-polar-care-kodiak-cold-therapy-system

    5. Order X10 Therapy Machine. See dedicated section below.

    6. Recliner ($116 on Amazon - Recliner Chair for Adults, Massage Fabric Small Recliner Home Theater Seating with Lumbar Support, Adjustable Modern Reclining Chair with Padded Seat Backrest for Living Room)

    7. Massage pad for recliner (borrowed by Buy Nothing community member)

    8. Folding Stationary bike (Amazon: $139 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CTHD4LFY?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_ct_S833BX88NH02CZKMG9NX)

    9. Ice packs that have straps to secure around the leg

    10. Heating pad (in case of back or neck pains)

    11. Shower Stool

    12. MSM unscented body lotion - apply to knees twice a day

    13. Supplies for dog sitters

    14. Extra strength Tylenol

  7. Prepare high protein meals to freeze for easy re-heating (ex: lentil chicken soup). Avoid deep friend and packaged/processed foods. Some friends have recommended meal delivery like Hello Fresh but they will need to be prepared.

  8. Personal care as needed such as haircut, pedicure, etc.

  9. Select an in-network Physical Therapy facility and schedule first session for two weeks post surgery.

The X10 Therapy Machine - Can it be true? Is it worth it?

I have 100% confidence in my surgeon so why would I pursue a therapy he doesn't endorse?

Well, because we own our destiny and have to advocate and educate.

I first heard about it from a friend who went through TKR a year ago. Her surgeon ordered it for her and her insurance covered it. She felt it was helpful in her recovery but it wasn't something I thought was for me.

Ten days before surgery, my husband was talking to a client who also used the X10 and gave it rave reviews.

After doing our own internet searches, listening to podcasts and having a call with the company, we decided it was worth the investment, even though it would be 100% self pay. The expected benefits include a significantly shortened recovery timeline, reduced swelling (i.e. pain) because you start moving the knee on day one. This movement also helps reduce the risk of blood clots. As our knees recover, and without movement, the sticky fibers can begin to build up and scar tissue can begin to develop. This is the cause of "stiff leg" syndrome and happens in 23% of TKR patients. Without the X10 machine, they have to go through MUA (Manipulation Under Anesthesia - a pain procure to break down the scar tissue. The X10 machine mimics this process but over a long period of time and pain free. After listening to the Bees Knees podcast and all of the success stories, I am excited to use this machine to help maximize my results.

Three Days Before TKR

It helps to put my thoughts in writing. The list of things to do and paperwork from the medical staff is overwhelming so seeing my own reminders gives me peace of mind. At this point, I don't have time to feel nervous. If I do, I just replay the podcast from the Bees Knees called The Perfect Bilateral Knee Replacement. It was so motivating and gave me a peaceful feeling that everything is going to be great as long as I go into it with the right attitude and fighting spirit.

  1. Wash sheets every day for three days. Need to create a sterile environment

  2. Wash with antibacterial soap each day.

  3. Don't use any lotions or soaps day of surgery

  4. No contacts

  5. Only clear liquids after 10 pm night before

  6. Drop off dogs with their beds, food, treats, toys, leashes, food dispensers

  7. Pack toiletries for overnight stay
